Gleneagles may grab the headlines in Perth and Kinross, but 30 minutes further up the A9 lies the excellent Murrayshall Country House Hotel and Golf Club, where significant recent investment has elevated the resort to a new level. Along with a major hotel refurbishment plus new spike bar and changing rooms, much has been going on out on the two courses laid out around Murrayshall House, parts of which date back to 1664.
The Lynedoch course, playing across the slopes on the higher terrain, was recently streamlined from 18 to 10 holes in a move to promote wider accessibility, with the affordable Lynedoch membership option breathing new life into this second course.
The 18-hole Murrayshall course on the lower slopes serves up some stirring views and a number of strong holes. It climbs away from the clubhouse before descending back down around the turn, then repeats the formula on the back nine. The par 3s are all strong, with the short but pretty 4th over water and the sterner 16th along a ridge standing out.
