Nestled along the banks of the River Braan and hidden within the heart of Craigvinean Forest lies The Hermitage— a serene woodland sanctuary cared for by the National Trust for Scotland. This enchanting landscape features carefully designed pathways, picturesque nature trails, an abundance of wildlife, and some of the tallest trees in Britain. Only 20 minutes away from Murrayshall.
Craigvinean Forest, meaning “crag of the goats” in Gaelic, is one of Scotland’s oldest managed forests. Planted in the 18th century by the 3rd Duke of Atholl with Alpine larch, legend says he used a cannon to spread the seeds on steep cliffs.
Today, a mixed woodland of Scots pine, beech, and conifers lines the trails. An accessible path leads to Pinecone Point, where a hand-built pinecone sculpture marks a stunning viewpoint over the River Tay, Dunkeld, and the northern hills.
Quieter than nearby Hermitage trails, Craigvinean offers scenic walks, historic follies, and rich wildlife — from red squirrels and roe deer to ospreys and pine martens.
Parking is available at Craigvinean Quarry car park (12 spaces).

Blair Castle has been the home of the Atholl family for over 750 years, its 30 rooms showcasing rich history through Medieval, Georgian, and Victorian eras. With elegant 18th-century interiors and Scots Baronial architecture, the castle tells the story of politicians, soldiers, and pioneers who shaped Scotland’s past. Outside, explore the 18th-century gardens, featuring a nine-acre walled garden, wooded grove, gothic folly, kirk ruin, and expansive deer park — a truly timeless landscape.
Castle Menzies, a magnificent 16th-century Scottish stronghold, was beautifully restored in the 20th century by the Menzies Clan Society. Its architecture is a fascinating blend of Renaissance design, representing the shift from the imposing Highland fortresses of earlier times to the more elegant mansion-style homes that followed. — restored from semi-ruin, it’s stripped back to its 16th-century stonework, revealing original features like shot holes, timber beams, and stone walls. Unlike many furnished castles, it gives a raw, authentic sense of how it was built. Explore almost every room at your own pace, with no guided routes. Visitors love the castle’s quirky charm and character, shaped by decades of volunteer care. Expect something truly different — and deeply authentic.
